PHILIP MORRIS CYPRUS: Voluntary Clean-Up at the Pedieos River

In celebration of International Volunteer Day, Philip Morris Cyprus took decisive action for environmental protection by organizing a voluntary clean-up at the Pedieos River in the Lakatamia area of Nicosia. The initiative was implemented on behalf of the company by Synergia, in collaboration with the environmental organization Save Your Hood Cyprus.

More than 30 volunteers joined forces and successfully removed a total of 3.5 tons (3,500 kg) of waste from the riparian zone - primarily bulky items and plastic packaging - which posed a direct threat to the local ecosystem and biodiversity.   Special emphasis was placed on addressing plastic pollution. Given that over 80% of waste found on Cyprus’s coastlines consists of plastics - which break down into microplastics and enter the food chain, endangering both human health and marine ecosystems - volunteers focused on clearing litter from the riverbed before it could reach the sea.

As part of the global Philip Morris International family, Philip Morris Cyprus reaffirms its commitment to ESG principles and sustainable development, demonstrating that targeted local action can deliver measurable results and inspire progress toward a plastic-free future.
